Please join Drs. Magdalena Janus and Clyde Hertzman as they discuss current findings and issues of the Early Development Instrument (EDI). The EDI is a short, teacher-completed instrument which measures the outcomes of the early years and children?s readiness to learn at school. The EDI has been applied widely across Canada. Approximately 50% of all Canadian children are now assessed on the EDI measurement before entry to Grade 1. Currently British Columbia, Manitoba and Ontario have full coverage.

Dr. Magdalena Janus has been involved, together with Dr. Offord, in the School Readiness to Learn Project, a community-linked project that developed the EDI. The focus of this work is to provide communities with information that will inform them about the status of children?s early development and provide a tool for mobilization of resources. The Canadian EDI database includes over 450,000 Kindergarten-aged children.

Dr. Hertzman has led the development of the provincial implementation of the EDI. As a result, BC is now the first jurisdiction in the world that has maps of early development that can illuminate the relationships between vulnerability patterns and socioeconomic conditions for every neighbourhood and school district in the province.
