SENATOR WILBERT J. KEON, O.C., MD, FRCSC
In 1969, Dr. Keon moved to Ottawa to found the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, where he was the Chief executive Office until April 2004. His clinical innovations are numerous, but most notable include the pioneering of surgical reperfusion in acute heart attacks during the early 1970s, the first cardiac transplant in Ottawa in 1983, the first use of Jarvik 7-70 artificial heart in Canada in1986, and in 1989, the first Canadian infant heart transplant. Dr. Keon remains active in health and economic policy through participation on Scientific and Clinical Advisory Boards and as Senator in the Senate of Canada and as Deputy Chair of the Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology. He is presently Chair of the Senate Sub-Committee studying Population Health.

Paul Kershaw’s research marries political theory with public policy analysis. His published work covers a wide range of contemporary issues, including child care services, parental leave, work-life balance, taxation of caregiving and dependency, male violence against women, and fiscal federalism. The focus on public policy reflects his interest in the determinants of population health and social justice. His work includes the influence that community environments yield over citizens’ early development and their lifecourse trajectories. Paul’s major publications include The British Columbia Atlas of Child Development.
DR. BRYAN KOLB | Professor, Department Neuroscience , University of Lethbridge
Bryan Kolb’s studies include how neurons of the cerebral cortex change in response to developmental factors including hormones, experience, stress, drugs, neurotrophins and injury, and how these changes are related to behaviour. His published work includes two textbooks with Ian Whishaw, Fundamentals of Human Neuropsychology, Sixth Edition and Introduction to Brain and Behavior, Second Edition, as well as three other books and over 300 articles and chapters. Bryan is a member of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research in the Experience-Based Brain Development program and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
